Sure Joss Whedon is bringing The Avengers back to theaters this weekend (perhaps he's really worried about Sleepwalk with Me taking a bunch of their box office take), but Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow won't be the only red-headed heroine in theaters for Labor Day. The LA Times has word that Disney and Pixar are giving a wider release back to Brave with 1,700 theaters, which is just as many screens as The Avengers expansion will receive. A Disney executive says, "“We wanted to try it again and use messaging that says, ‘Get it while you can, one last time before these films head to video’” Sounds about right to us.

This isn't the first time Disney has brought a Pixar film back for a wider Labor Day release after an earlier summer run. Both Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 got the same treatment in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Brave has been in theaters for less time since it opened on June 22nd, so I'm not sure how many viewers are clamoring to see it again or for the first time (a reduced ticket price would be nice for these kind of releases). However, with Hurricane Isaac bringing rain through the Midwest this weekend, families might avoid cooking out and camping in favor of the multiplex. They just have to decide if they want to see Merida launching arrows to win her own hand in marriage, or Hawkeye taking out Chitauri. Sound good?
