We've been writing about "The Last Witch Hunter" for a couple of years now, as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter helmer Timur Bekmambetov was once in talks to direct Cory Goodman's script (he wrote the Paul Bettany action thriller Priest), before those duties shifted over to The Crazies director Breck Eisner. Now The Wrap is reporting that Fast Five star Vin Diesel is in talks to take the lead role of one of the last remaining witch hunters, whose job is to prevent witches and warlocks from reproducing. What's he supposed to do, sit them down and lecture them about overpopulation? This concept is ridiculous. Read on!

Some may see the development of this movie as capitalizing on the recent "popularity" of hunting supernatural creatures, as seen in Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the upcoming Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. But is this concept something that we really want to see done over and over again? If the response on Twitter and feedback to our recent posting of the Hansel and Gretel trailer is any indication, this is a trend that should die quickly. It's such a tough line to walk between satire and a movie like this taking itself too seriously, but I guess we're left with no choice but to see how it turns out.

As for Diesel, he's dabbled in sci-fi before and the results have been pretty mixed. He provided the voice for the title character in The Iron Giant, but he also starred in the Riddick films and the action movie Babylon A.D., which was terrible and sounds a bit more thematically similar to what we can expect from The Last Witch Hunter. I just hope it isn't another "dark and gritty" story. Thoughts?
