Banners with Japanese text saying "Metal Gear Solid Hollywood Movie" complete with the Columbia Pictures logo were seen at the event, so it sounds like the project is still set up at Sony. Then Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima stepped on stage to confirm that the film adaptation was still in the works and brought Arad on stage to bring the excitement level up. The producer said, "For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters. Comic books are now biggest genre in cinema. Video games are the comic books of today. We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed."
It's just too bad that a video game movie has yet to live up to the quality of the great comic book movies that have hit the big screen over the past decade or so. There's a good chance that this project could fall apart all over again, but right now it sounds like the adaptation is in the early stages of planning, so maybe this time it'll happen if Arad can round up the right talent like he did for Spider-Man.
The question is who is gruff and tough enough to take on the role of the lead character Solid Snake? The character is a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit. Snake must liberate two hostages, the head of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the president of a major arms manufacturer, confront the terrorists, and stop them from launching a nuclear strike. There's plenty of action stars out there, but since this is such a beloved video game franchise, casting this role will be under just as much video game fan scrutiny as casting Lara Croft for Tomb Raider.
