Michael Keaton Replaces Hugh Laurie as 'RoboCop' Remake Villain

RoboCop movie
Though Hugh Laurie was once slated to play the cold, sarcastic CEO of Omni Corp - the company responsible for creating the cyborg cop after Detroit police officer Alex Murphy (played by "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman) is killed in action but resurrected as RoboCop - he's since dropped from the production. Perhaps it has something to do with the hellish production that director Jose Padilha talked about. Thankfully, a solid replacement has been found as Deadline reports Michael Keaton, fresh off turns in Toy Story 3 and The Other Guys will play villain Raymond Sellars. That's enough to pique my interest again.

I was hoping that after a couple great turns in 2010, Keaton would be on the verge of a big comeback, returning to the glory he once held in the 80's and 90's but he hasn't had too many other roles. But this character is yet another that could get him back on top, and that's something I'd really like to see. After roles like Beetlejuice, Mr. Mom, Gung Ho, The Paper, Jackie Brown and of course Tim Burton's Batman films, having Keaton take on a role of this caliber will be awesome.

Likely in an effort to do damage control on the negative picture painted recently Padilha said, "It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets. Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place.” Let's hope this puzzle doesn't suck.
