Jon Turteltaub Looks to Direct Chubby Kid Sports Fantasy 'Beached'

Beached
We've seen a Jamaican bobsledding team in Cool Runnings, a grade school kid pitch for the Chicago Cubs in Rookie of the Year and a dog play basketball in Air Bud, but this next fantastical family sports flick just sounds too silly. THR has word that Jon Tuteltaub, the man behind Disnsey's National Treasure movies and interesting take on The Sorcerer's Apprentice (and the aforemetnioned bobsledding sports flick) will direct Beached, a film about a husky 4-year old kid who falls overboard his family's boat and ends up being raised by whales. But the kicker is that this kid goes on to become a champion Olympic swimmer. What?!

This sounds like a "Saturday Night Live" parody, but the film has been in development since 1997, and seems to be gaining traction at Fox. Ted Griffin (writer of Ocean's 11 and Tower Heist) is behind the original script, but Turteltaub will oversee a rewriter of the script. I don't know if Fox is counting on the popularity of swimming at the Olympics with athletes like Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte bringing in audiences to the theaters, but the story just sounds ridiculous. Unless it has a tongue-in-cheek nature poking fun at underdog sports dramas, then I have a feeling this is going to be a dud. How about you?
