Chris O'Dowd in Crowd Pleasing, Music-Centric 'The Sapphires' Trailer

The Sapphires Trailer
After making quite a breakthrough comedic turn in Bridesmaids, Irish actor Chris O'Dowd is storming Hollywood, and will next be seen in Judd Apatow's This is 40 with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann. But O'Dowd still has his foot in the indie world with The Sapphires, a Cannes selected film that will also be playing at TIFF next month. Set during the Vietnam War the film paints a portrait of the late 1960s girl group The Sapphires, Australia's answer to The Supremes. Based on the hit stage play by Tony Briggs, the film looks like a real crowd-pleaser full of some great classic music and quite the quartet of lovely singers. Watch it!

Here's the first trailer for Wayne Blair's The Sapphires via TIFF:

The Sapphires are four young Koori girls — Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy), Kay (Shari Sebbens) and Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell) — who are discovered in a dusty outback tavern by lanky, often soused Irish-born talent scout Dave (Chris O'Dowd). While the racist locals vehemently reject the notion of a group of Aboriginal entertainers, Dave vows to make The Sapphires shine — not just in town but all over the world. Wayne Blair directs the film based on Tony Brigg's stage play which he adapted with Keith Thompson. The film played at Cannes and also shows at TIFF next month. No US release date is set. Good?
