Ken Kwapis is not a director that we pay attention to much, mostly because his filmography is just a bit out of our demographic. Back in the 90s, he directed the orangutan comedy Dunston Checks In, and more recently helmed lighthearted fare like The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, License to Wed, He's Just Not That Into You, and Big Miracle. But his next project sounds like a big departure for the filmmaker, as Deadline reports that he's writing and directing an adaptation of Diana Wagman's novel The Care and Feeding of Exotic Pets. It's a kidnapping story with a twist involving a seven foot long iguana. Read on!

The story follows Winnie Parker, a normal woman with a teenage daughter and an ex-husband who hosts a game show. One day, she's kidnapped and taken to the kidnapper's home, which is kept in tropical heat because of Cookie, a seven-foot iguana that lives in the kitchen. As Winnie battles back and forth with her violent captor, she has to connect the dots and find out why she was kidnapped in the first place, and save the rest of her family in the process.

It will be fascinating to see a director more known for his light comedy work take on a storyline with such dark overtones, and it remains to be seen if Kwapis is capable of successfully making that kind of genre jump. Either way, I definitely admire the guy for giving it a shot and working outside his comfort zone (he's also known well for his work on the American version of "The Office"), and a lot of other directors in Hollywood could learn a lesson about risk-taking from Kwapis.
