Here's the new official plot synopsis, originally from the Annapurna Pictures website:
“In the not so distant future, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.”
It sounds like Phoenix's return to the big screen should be powerful with The Master this year and this new project with Jonze arriving sometime next year. And while this feels like something Charlie Kaufman would come up with for Jonze, especially after their collaboration on Adaptation, Kaufman isn't aboard this flick. The film has been rumored to arrive sometime in 2013, but there's also a good chance we'll see it on the film festival circuit before it hits theaters. Frankly, I can't wait to see the kind of abstract spin Jonze is sure to put on this film that could easily have been another studio based romantic comedy.
