'Ruin' Director Wes Ball Lands 'The Maze Runner' Directing Gig at Fox

The Maze Runner
The next Hunger Games? It's time for The Maze Runner. Earlier this year, we featured a post-apocalyptic animated short called Ruin created in his own spare time by filmmaker Wes Ball. A few months later, his short got acquired in Hollywood to be made into a feature film, he landed agents & representation, and started getting in the mix at 20th Century Fox. Now Deadline is reporting that Fox has set Ball to direct the project The Maze Runner, an adaptation of James Dashner's post-apocalyptic book, about a community of boys trapped in an enormous maze which is part of a mysterious test. Sounds like a good fit for Wes Ball.

Fox first picked up The Maze Runner back in late 2010, originally with Catherine Hardwicke attached to direct. Now it's in the hands of a new director. The project is being developed by the Gotham Group (The Spiderwick Chronicles, Abduction), with producer-turned-writer Noah Oppenheim (WarGames remake, Snabba Cash remake, 1984, Jackie) behind the first draft of the script. James Dashner's The Maze Runner is a trilogy of books, set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world of an enormous maze. The start of it reminds me of Cube: "Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name." It sounds like it has potential, I just hope Ball can make something truly unique to his style. Watch Ruin if you haven't yet.
