Joss Whedon Talks Marvel's Phase Two and 'The Avengers' Sequel

Joss Whedon Talks Marvel's Phase Two and 'The Avengers' Sequel
Yesterday The Avengers director Joss Whedon hyped up James Gunn and his take on Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the pillars in Marvel's upcoming Phase Two of their cinematic universe. Now he's back to talking about his own work as an "overseer" for this next round of films with Marvel's iconic heroes and also his progress on the highly anticipated 2015 release of The Avengers 2. Obviously he doesn't have any specific plot points to talk about (and Marvel likely wouldn't let him even if he did), so his words are vague, but it's also clear again that Whedon is a fan just like the rest of us and doesn't have a chip on his shoulder.

When it comes to overseeing Marvel's Phase Two, Whedon says he'll let everyone do their own work:

"Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don't want to be is the guy they dread, who's going to come in and say" - here, Whedon affects a pompous British accent - "'Oh, well I have the power to say change this.' I'm not that."
Though he's going to be a great voice to help guide Marvel's continued ambitious plans, it's good to hear that he's not turning into the bossy kid on the playground. Of course, when it comes to The Avengers 2, Whedon is in complete control. And while we don't know what's coming for Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury, the director indicates it's not going to suddenly be an easy road just because the team knows how to work together. Whedon told 24 Hours (via ComingSoon) just a little bit:

"The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me."

The big question is how the events of Iron Man 3 (May 3rd, 2013), Thor: The Dark World (November 8th, 2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4th, 2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1st, 2014) will have on The Avengers and their relationship with each other. In addition, if Ant Man gets off the ground before 2015, as several reports seem to indicate, then we might even be looking at a new team member as well. Either way, Joss Whedon is going to be very busy, and fans will be thirsty for every tidbit they can get their hands on.
