Here's what Whedon said about making his decision to direct Marvel's The Avengers 2:
There's a business aspect to it and I would be disingenuous not to say that, but the question for me is, Do I have another story to tell about these people? So we worked on the business side of it and I didn't think it was going to happen--I was like 'I'm never going to do this again.' But once they worked on the business aspect of it I thought that seems fair and cool, so, the question was, Do I have another thing to say? I was in London and I went to a pub and had some fish and chips and a pint and started writing in my notebook. I'm writing if I was going to do this what would I say and 40 minutes later I filled the notebook. So I text my agent and said to make the deal. I'm so in love with that universe and the characters and the way they were played and I have so much more I want to do with them. I know I can't match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film and that's what I'm excited about, that's the new room of fear I'm entering now.
Amen. This isn't like a Transformers 4 situation in which the studio essentially bribes Michael Bay to come back to direct another entry. This is a situation in which Whedon, all alone and without any studio pressure, filled an entire notebook of ideas and stories that he wants to tell. That passion came through in the first movie, and I'm sure it'll transfer again in his coming efforts for Marvel, and it's cool to hear this sort of behind the scenes insight into how a major decision like that was made. Reminds me of the stories you hear about how George Lucas and Steven Spielberg hit Hawaii and came up with the idea for Indiana Jones.
It's also interesting to hear Whedon say that he knows he can't match the success of the first film. It's very possible (likely, even?) that Avengers 2 could make as much or even more than the first one, considering that 3D probably isn't going anywhere and the first one already has a massive worldwide following of fans who saw it multiple times. Not that box office is in any way an indicator of quality, but it's still worth mentioning. I do like that he's saying he wants to make a "better film" though, because by his own admission, The Avengers wasn't a great movie, it was just a "great time" and it's really cool to know he's savvy enough to know the difference. Obviously we're big fans here, and we'll be anxiously awaiting The Avengers 2 when it hits theaters on May 1st, 2015.
