Indie directing duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden put together the drama Half Nelson which resulted in an Oscar nomination for Ryan Gosling. Now they might have a chance to give Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal another Oscar nod as THR reports the actor is in talks to join Mississippi Grind, a film that Fleck and Boden will write and direct themselves. The film follows a younger gambling addict (Gyllenhaal) who teams up with a down-on-his-lusck gambler with crippling debt and takes a trip through the South with the hopes of winning back all that has been lost. The role of the elder gambler has yet to be cast. Read on!

Since this is an indie drama, it's likely they'll end up getting more back than their money on this trip, and the cash will come in second to learning some valuable life lessons from the road and each other. Fleck and Boden have a knack for giving interesting roles to deserving actors. After Zach Galifianakis became big for his role in The Hangover, they were smart enough to offer him a funny but dramatic role in It's Kind of a Funny Story featuring a restrained but solid performance from the comedian (see it if you haven't).
