'Hangover' Director Todd Phillips Heads to Crime with 'The Gambler'

The Gambler
Aside from his work in documentary filmmaking in the earlier part of his career in the 90s, director Todd Phillips has worked exclusively in comedies, directing films like Old School, The Hangover and Due Date. But once Phillips is finished with The Hangover Part III (which is supposed to be the last part of the franchise), he's heading into new territory. THR reports Phillips is going to get dramatic as the director is currently in talks with Paramount Pictures to be at the helm of a remake of the 1974 crime drama The Gambler, the story of a UCLA literature professor with a gambling problem who runs afoul of gangsters.

Martin Scorsese was once attached to direct with a script from his The Departed screenwriter William Monahan and Leonardo DiCaprio interested in starring, but clearly he's moved on. The original film's producer Irwin Winkler is back to produce this remake which looks to be Phillips next project after finishing The Hangover Part III which starts shooting in September. Phillips jumping to drama isn't a crazy idea as his films almost always lends themselves to grittier visuals and stylistic shots not common in comedies like this. The question is who will Phillips get to take the lead role if not DiCaprio anymore?
